Understanding Your Hair Type

There are so many us who are still struggling to understand our hair type, by the end of this blog, the hope is that you will get some general guidelines to help you identify yours.

Currently there are about 10 hair types, however we will go over the main four categories and provide you with some examples of the pattern for each subcategories of hair.

Determining your hair type can help you understand its unique characteristics and choose appropriate hair care products and styling techniques.

1. Type 1 (Straight Hair)

Straight hair lacks significant curl or wave patterns. It tends to be shiny and reflects light easily. It may be fine, medium, or coarse in texture.

2. Type 2 (Wavy Hair)

Wavy hair has a slight "S" shape and tends to have more volume than straight hair. It may range from loose, gentle waves to more defined and pronounced waves. Wavy hair can be fine, medium, or coarse.

3. Type 3 (Curly Hair

Curly hair has a distinct curl pattern and may range from loose curls to tight coils. It tends to be prone to frizz and can be fine, medium, or coarse in texture.

4. Type 4 (Coily Hair

Coily hair has tight, springy curls or coils. It may appear dense and shrinkage is common, making the hair appear shorter than it actually is. Coily hair is often prone to dryness and requires regular moisturizing. It can be fine, medium, or coarse.

To determine your hair type more accurately, here a few steps you can try:

a) Wash your hair with a shampoo to remove any product buildup or residue.

b) Allow your hair to air dry without using any styling products.

c) Observe the natural state of your hair without any manipulation or styling.

d) Compare the photos provided and note the natural texture and pattern of your hair, including its level of curl or wave, volume, and texture.

It's normal for individuals to have different hair types on different parts of their head, so it's possible to have a combination of hair types.
