The Key Stages of the Hair Growth Cycle

Understanding the hair growth process may better help you care for your hair and address any concerns related to hair growth. Here are the key stages of the hair growth cycle:

1. Anagen Phase (Growth Phase):

This is the active phase of hair growth. Hair follicles produce new cells, and the hair shaft grows from the root. The length of the anagen phase varies for everyone, but it typically lasts between 2 to 7 years. The longer the anagen phase, the longer your hair can grow.

2. Catagen Phase (Transition Phase):

After the anagen phase, the hair follicle enters a short transitional phase called the catagen phase. During this phase, the hair follicle shrinks, and the hair stops growing. This phase lasts for about 2 to 3 weeks.

3. Telogen Phase (Resting Phase):

Following the catagen phase, the hair follicle enters the telogen phase, also known as the resting phase. The hair follicle remains dormant, and the old hair is released from the follicle. This phase typically lasts for about 3 to 4 months.

4. Exogen Phase (Shedding Phase):

During the telogen phase, the hair is released from the follicle, and new hair starts to grow in its place. Shedding old hair is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. On average, we shed about 50 to 100 hairs per day.

After the exogen phase, the hair follicle re-enters the anagen phase, and the cycle starts again. It is important to note that not all hair follicles are in the same phase at the same time. This is why we have hairs of different lengths and why hair loss or shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle.

Factors that can influence the hair growth process include genetics, age, hormonal changes, overall health, and lifestyle. It is normal to experience variations in hair growth rates and shedding patterns throughout your life.

To support healthy hair growth, it is important to maintain a balanced diet, essential vitamins, manage stress levels, practice good hair care habits, and avoid excessive heat styling or chemical treatments that can damage the hair. Additionally, regular scalp massages and using products that promote scalp health can help stimulate hair growth.

If you have concerns about your hair growth or are experiencing excessive hair loss, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or a dermatologist who specializes in hair and scalp health. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatments or lifestyle changes to support healthy hair growth.
